Because they want to make sure that you REALLY WANT THE JOB so they make you do stupid, evil tasks. And they want to make sure you can spell and use proper grammer. Which I can't spell.
Because it's hard to impress people in writing when everyone else is saying the exact same thing (although of course, 90% of them are lying, which you're obviously not.)
Completely random: I got a job once because I used a semi-colon properly in my cover letter, and was the only person out of 25+ applicants to submit a letter with no typos.
