I have been led to believe Americans do not have an August long weekend. I refuse to believe that is true. Is it because of your extra long Thanksgiving? Why wouldn't you want a day off in summer?

Here in Rhode Island we do! We're the only state in the union that celebrates it because woah it is politically incorrect (and we're obnoxious like that) but we have Victory Day (ahem, formerly known as Victory over Japan Day O_o) the second Monday in August. So this coming weekend is a long weekend for me (thank goodness!)

What's BC Day? The only long weekend that we have in the summer is 4th of July.

Alas, we do not! We have Memorial Day in May to start the summer, Labor Day in September to end it, and Fourth of July in the middle to break things up, but that's it.

That is equal parts hilarious and awesome to me. And you get a holiday out of it! Excellent!

I live in British Columbia, so the first Monday in August is British Columbia day. Other provinces have other holidays (Nova Scotia has Natal Day, as an example) but almost all of us get a long weekend in August to celebrate the awesome that is our province.

Ok I am generally aghast on your behalf. We get Victoria Day in May (commonwealth ftw!), July 1st, the August civic holiday (the name varies by province) and Labour Day (the 'u' is silent!) in September.

I suppose you don't get Remembrance Day (Nov 11) off either. I weep for you and your countrywomen.

Actually, we do, we just call it Veterans' Day. :-D

Summer isn't so bad, though. The worst stretch is from late February through all of May, where there are no long weekends in sight at all. If you're out of school and therefore without a spring break, it's all very sad.

3 long weekends for the summer seemed like enough to me before, but now I'm jealous that you get another one. :) But so many people take days off during the summer that it doesn't seem to matter that we don't have an official holiday. Heck, my dept at work hasn't been fully staffed for more than a month because at least one person has been on vacation on any given day.
