Sweet lord, it's finally done. The fic that would not end.
Title: Settling
Author: elly427
Summary: Life before the colonel, life after the colonel. She's just stuck in the year zero.
Classifications: Sam/Pete, Sam/Jack, post LCII, angst, PG
Author's notes: Massive thanks to
poohmusings and
lyssie who both said "Yeah, I'll read that" when I was going crazy.
Sadly, this fic is not about pants.

I wasn't going to read it again so soon, y'know.
I was going to wait. Until I had time to stare vacantly at the wall and regather my thoughts.
But I didn't.
Instead, I now sit here at work, feeling all melancholy, and kinda wishing I could read it again. Hrm.

Oh, you SO win. YOU WIN!!
This was awesome. And awful. But *awesome.* And so real.
And we really *do* share a muse because -- well, you read what I read -- and the little ho is totally peddling the same stuff at both of us (except yours is just WAY better. And mine is just... not done. And yet, somehow different enough from yours that I will have to finish it anyway even if not before the season premiere *tomorrow*). BUT ACK! SO GOOD!!
And "good" in the way of it actually being hard to read because everything is just going along and we're just as caught up in it as Sam except that *we* can (sort of) see the end coming because we read the headers and... we know you :)
And the end? You answered a real, fandom-long fantasy of mine that I just wasn't quite sure how to pull off. So sweet. So perfect. SO RIGHT. And Jack admitting that he has to get over her was SO key, because, damn. Your scenes with those two are so bang-on, and you convey all the frustration and the relief and everything else SO WELL. (Not to mention that you manage to keep up the angst before that without dropping it, so that even when you're like "things are going really well" the subtext still reads OMGANGST!!1! and I admire you madly for that)
I love every bit of this, and you rock! And you *finished* it!! And... I'm going to go lie down before I hurt myself now.
-- Little Red, caught by the insane desire to drive to Halifax NOW, muse in tow.

Oh, you SO win. YOU WIN!!
Oh, I think we'll just wait and see until you publish yours. I think there may be some reevaluation then.
And we really *do* share a muse because -- well, you read what I read -- and the little ho is totally peddling the same stuff at both of us
Yes! See! I told you. Really similar. *looks at muse disapprovingly* She should know she's not supposed to share like that.
And mine is just... not done. And yet, somehow different enough from yours that I will have to finish it anyway even if not before the season premiere *tomorrow*)
Stupid passage of time. If you need anything to get it done, give me a holler.
And "good" in the way of it actually being hard to read because everything is just going along and we're just as caught up in it as Sam
And that was why it was the fic that would not end. Because I'd reread before I started writing have no where to go with it.
and... we know you :)
Moi? *tries to look innocent* Hey, lady, I wrote Sam/Jack/Daniel, I'll have you know. *snorfle*
And Jack admitting that he has to get over her was SO key, because, damn.
All thanks to my trusty beta Karen. That scene was different in my first draft, but this one works, I think.
(Not to mention that you manage to keep up the angst before that without dropping it, so that even when you're like "things are going really well" the subtext still reads OMGANGST!!1! and I admire you madly for that)
Aww. *does angstdance (which obviously is slow and to a funeral-like dirge)* Angst is like a drug, a sweet, sweet drug.
And you *finished* it!!
And you can finish yours. *nods firmly*
I'm going to go lie down before I hurt myself now.
*hugs you madly*

Like that's a punishment. Mmmmm, Grogan. Though actually, I think I'm more of an Eliot girl myself.
And... *sniff*. Arg. Good story and I hate you for making me read it. But love you for your prose.
Thank you. And can I just remind you that you wrote Sam/Pete porn? Which I love? So, really, can you blame a girl?

THIS is why you and I would get on so well in real life :)
I've discovered it's very, very essential that your girl friends have different taste in men than you.
And can I just remind you that you wrote Sam/Pete porn? Which I love? So, really, can you blame a girl?
You know what? TSK on you both. If I make a shipwithpants community will you two actually write... ship... with (or without) pants?

Maybe. But you're not alone. I think I became my fraternity mascot. I was, like, The Incredible Sleeping Redhead Who Said Silly Disjointed Stuff A Lot.
Oh, I think we'll just wait and see until you publish yours.
*raises eyebrow of disbelief* Um, so, yeah, RIGHT. And you automatically win by being first (and being DONE), even if it wasn't SO AWESOME. WHICH IT IS. But, you know... *ponders*... maybe, since these are both AUs, they're kind of... related AUs. Forks in the road. ("We travel down a path in which Sam is angsty. If we turn right at the fork, she is angsty like SO. If we turn left, she is angsty like this OTHER so. And Janet is there, but that's incidental.")
Yes! See! I told you. Really similar.
SERIOUSLY! I tweaked. I was like "It's like I wrote this. Except *I didn't.*" But really, this has always been more your style than mine, the tarty little muse just exported it. We should probably make sure she isn't peddling our stories to anybody else between here and Halifax.
Stupid passage of time.
!!!!!!
If you need anything to get it done, give me a holler.
If I get stuck, would you be interested in reading more? Or, I don't know, beating me remotely? Your fic, naturally, put me in the right mood to keep writing it for now... but I may fall off the wagon once the new season airs.
Because I'd reread before I started writing have no where to go with it.
HAHAHAHA *glares at muse* SERIOUSLY! I know! I keep reading it to get into the pacing, and then am like "Damn, I'm depressed. I have no will to write." And after you've read the same passage like eight times? The whole story starts to feel really long and static.
Angst is like a drug, a sweet, sweet drug.
I so need to quit. I LIKE fluff. I LIVE for fluff. And yet all of my currently active WIPs are in a scene of Sam (or mini!Sam) angst. And the angstmuse is in Halifax, so I keep having to send my fluffmuse back to comb over the handwritten how-to notes she left.
Anyway!! I *heart* you madly and am *really* glad I showed you my fic before you posted this and also that you're cool with me continuing to write and post it. (You know, I was really all worried like "OMG! Elly will be pissed at me for plagiarizing her!" And then I was like "But... I wrote it *before* I read her story... and this muse-sharing thing is just pretend... isn't it?")
And I WILL finish it! RAAH!

Y'know, if Sam were real, she'd kick our asses for all the angst we're putting her through. But this is a neat thought. Huh.
And you also make it sound like one of those National geographic nature specials and that makes me giggle. "See the Sam Carter in the lab, her natural habitat."
We should probably make sure she isn't peddling our stories to anybody else between here and Halifax.

Yes! Oh, yes! If it means I get to read more, I'm there with bells on, babe.
The whole story starts to feel really long and static.
And then you get panicKed because you've spent all this time working on it and it doesn't make sense anymore and itisn't going anywhere and you turn off the computer and go to sleep. Yes.

Anyway :)
Y'know, if Sam were real, she'd kick our asses for all the angst we're putting her through.
Except we *do* tend to put her in a position to have her psyche nicely reorganized and then to get regularly cuddled by Jack. So we don't *totally* suck. We are giving her onetruelove!! Just... with a hefty angst toll. :-D
And you also make it sound like one of those National geographic nature specials and that makes me giggle. "See the Sam Carter in the lab, her natural habitat."
*DIES*
OMG. That is too funny. Somebody should give Jonas a camcorder or something. He could be making a video to send off to... I dunno, Rya'c or something. *still laughing*
If it means I get to read more, I'm there with bells on, babe.
*smiles shyly* As usually happens, the moment I have a weekend and have TIME, my muse hides completely. Maybe I can lure her out with cookies. Or... wheatgrass. Sheesh, do we have NO junk food left in this house!?
And then you get panicKed because you've spent all this time working on it and it doesn't make sense anymore and itisn't going anywhere and you turn off the computer and go to sleep. Yes.
*eyes you* Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that we aren't the same person?
Huh. Maybe there's something to it.
Seriously. There's an X-File in here somewhere.

I know I'm late reading this cause I've been in a weird mood but I'm glad I came back for it. This is just amazing and duuuuuuude!!!! *sighs*
This isn't going as she imagined it would. To be honest, if it were as she'd imagined it, she wouldn't be sitting on the opposite side of the couch from him right now. Except this makes a hell of a lot more sense than what she'd imagined.
I loved this so much. It's so what they are about.
I really really really love this fic because I can see Sam caring for Pete in this way but it's just not quite enough for her to really settle and be happy with.
And I love you for writing this. *smoooooooch* Thank you.

Yes. Exactly. That's what I wanted people to get. Pete works well as a diversion for her, but in the long run it doesn't exactly work.
