Well. I'm a pathetic Carson Beckett fangirl. And Shep's pretty damned cute, but McKay is not as charming as I was lead to believe. Oh, and Ford mumbles. A lot. And I want to like Teyla and Elizabeth but wow, we're not getting much character development for them, are we?

Atlantis: it doesn't suck nearly was much as SG1 did in it's first season.

I really like the credits and the music and the blue and greys and grays of the opening. Pretty. Much nicer glamour shots than of the SG1 cast.

Now, let me get this out there. I have an undying fangirl-esque crush on Beckett: I'm exactly the sort of girl they were looking to attract with this character. The accent and the cuteness and the comitment to professional ethics! *sigh* I just really like him and am thrilled he's a regular next season. Mmm. Yes.I was squeeee like crazy over the beginning of 'The Rising' because Carson and Rodney in a room is awesome and hilarious and there should be more.

Wow. The Wraith. They suck. Er, as bad guys. They're too amorphous, there's not one bad guy to fight against, just a massive whole, and that's going to have to change, I think. They'll never kill them all. At least with SG1 there were system lords, and really, at the beginning there was just Apophis who was the big bad for a while.

What else? Contrary to what seems to be somewhat popular belief, I'm not really seeing Shepherd as Jack-lite. I get why people see that, and maybe I'm just relieved because he's his own character. I like John; there's a crapload of backstory there, and he's got the flippant thing going for a completely different reason than Jack. Can't articulate why. I think John genuinely doesn't care. Military protocol is what's working to keep Atlantis from collapsing, so that's cool and he'll deal with it. If more military doesn't come through from earth i can't decide if John's going to get pushed further away from the whole air force dealy or if he'll take the hardline in response to all the humanitairians running around Atlantis.

And yes, John seems to have chemistry with a block of wood, but none of it's struck me as necessarily sexual in nature. He just seems like that really cool, fun guy everyone gets along with.

Ship-wise I'm not really feeling anything. *ducks mutiple flying objects*. John/Elizabeth is pretty much there in a couple places - at the end of the one with the bug stuck to John's next, at the end of The Eye, uh, at the end of the pilot on the balcony. Sure. I see it. But it's not yet causing the ole' shipsquee reaction, it's more like "Oh. Okay. Yeah. I see that." But on that note, I don't really see McShep or McWeir. Okay, I see McWeir. They're adorable. A.dor.a.ble. Poor Rodney just doesn't know what to do with himself. And hey, is anyone shipping Carson and Elizabeth? No? Hmm.

The thing I'm finding really intriguing about Atlantis is the feeling of dislocation I think they've managed to pull off pretty well. They seem to have made an effort to try to find locations that don't look exactly like Vancouver and its environs and have certainly not used any sets that feel really SG1 in nature (Well, except the desert in The Defiant One, because that was any and every desert planet SG1's ever been to. Ever. It's nearly the same camera angle as from other SG1 eps. Yes, I found it so noticible as to be distracting.) And the characters are really acting like they feel like they're out exploring a new frontier. This is neat and weird, all at the same time. It's a feeling that's missing from SG-1 now, even though just because SG1's in the same galaxy, there's no reason for there really to be anything expected on the planets they visit, or not that much more so than in the Pegasus galaxy.

Mostly I'm enjoying Atlantis. It's, for the most part, good television. Really, really, REALLY like the hurricane two parter. A lot. Except Zora, because she was a little too Inigo Montoya for my liking. But then Teyla got to kick her ass, which was nice and very pretty. But yeah, I'm enjoying it.
