The '5/6 songs that mean a lot' meme with the added bonus of elly's favorite lines!
1. 5 Days in May - Blue Rodeo
They met in a hurricane / standing in the shelter out of the rain / He tucked a note into her hand
and Well, I know my past / you were there / for everything I've done / you are the one
I . Love. This. Song. Seriously. There's just - God. there's something so beautiful and aching in the imagery and the melody and everything and hearing it live is like a religious experience. Jesus. I've always wanted to write a story, a back story to this song and I've never been able to come up with anything beautiful enough. (Also? I may have to do a "5 Blue Rodeo songs that I love/mean a lot to me" post because they're my boys and limiting myself to one for this list is painful.)
2. Beautiful Day - U2
The heart is a bloom / shoots up from the stoney ground / There's no room / No space to rent in this town
Making me choose my favorite U2 song is just mean. Mean. But Beautiful Day just makes something in me strain upwards every single time I hear it. It makes me want to sing at the top of my range, my voice tight and hopeful and urgent and I love that feeling
3. City of Lakes - Matt Mays -
And at the end of the day / I will return to the city of lakes
Because it's a song about home that makes me a little sad every time I hear it, but also because he opened for Blue Rodeo when I last saw them live and this song rocks live.
4. Paper Bag - Fiona Apple:
Hunger hurts / and I want him so bad / oh it kills / 'cause I know I'm a mess he don't want to clean up / I've got to fold because these hands are just too shakey to hold / hunger hurts / but starving works / when it costs too much to love
Mostly because I was at just the right age when Fiona Apple showed up but mainly because one of my best friends writes the lyrics to this song in the margins of his notebooks when he's bored in lectures and it will always make me think of him, despite the fact I'm not sure where he's going right now.
5. Live and Learn - The Cardigans -
I came home in the morning / And everything was gone / Oh, what have I done? / I dropped dead in the hallway / Cursing the dawn / Oh come on sun / Why must I burn / I'm just trying to learn
Because I bought this cd in Toronto and listened to it for 26 hours straight on the train ride home to Halifax, and I love the regret and the acceptance buried in the song. Plus the chorus just kicks ass
6.Elsewhere (acoustic) - Sarah McLauchlin -
BecauseI believe this is heaven to no one else but me / and I'll defend it long as I can be / left here to linger / in silence / if I choose to / would you try to / understand it it just, damnit, speaks to me.
If anyone wants a copy of these songs, lemme know and I'll work something out.
