BSG fic. Set some years in the future.
When they finally find earth, it doesn't want them.
"You've got to understand." The man is small, shorter than Lee, shorter than her but stands with his feet firmly planted. "You say you've got killer space robots on your tail. I can't in good conscience allow you to stay here because we can't protect ourselves if they find us." Kara's sure her fingernails have pierced the skin of her hands, can't decide if the slickness within her clenched fists is blood or sweat.
"I am sorry," the president says and Kara can't stand the way his words sort of slur together, the way he won't meet her eyes, the way he's already dismissed them and is looking to his security forces to escort them out.
And then, and then the president looks at her, glances towards Lee and he must see something in their body language because she can almost see him consciously relax, can see him use body language to try to minimize the threat he's providing. "We’ll allow you to go back to your ship, and you can leave. We'd appreciate it if y'all took off as soon as possible."
Kara shakes her head and starts to speak but Lee cuts her off. "Thank you, Mr. President." And he shoots Kara a look and after so long together she knows exactly what that look means but right now she's ignoring it, ignoring him and good sense like she hasn't in years.
She speaks, and it takes a lot to contain it to less than a scream. "You've got to be frakking kidding me. We've come half way across the universe, we've seen no signs of cylons for years, we tell you you're the long lost thirteenth colony and there were billions of your species out there and you don't care? You're going to frakking send us back out there?" As she speaks she moves towards him and barely notices as he waves back his security forces.
"Did it ever occur to you that there was a reason my ancestors left, Commander Thrace?" The president takes a deep breath, stands a little straighter and looses his folksy charm and some subtle shift of something makes him a hell of a lot more intimidating. Kara is reminded of Roslin in some indefinable way and doesn't back down. "Maybe we're not willing to be found." And there's something in the words he's saying that makes Kara think maybe their arrival, or at least their existence wasn't the surprise everyone pretended it was.
The president holds her eyes, his gaze steady and she doesn't look away until someone, one of the president's advisors clears his throat. The man in front of her steps back but doesn't step down.
"Now, I can't keep the Japanese prime minister waiting any longer, so if you'll just allow my men to escort you back to your ship," he gestures to four heavily armed men in uniform. "You can be on your way."
Kara doesn't know what to do, is paralysed, can't move speak think but Lee's at her side, reaching forward and shaking the president's hand.
"Mr. President." And some part of her is proud of Lee, still the diplomat but still sounding so damn cold.
The president smiles. "Mr. Ambassador." He shakes Lee's hand, turns to Kara. "Commander." And gods, she wants to be adult about this but she just can't find the strength, so she lets his hand hang their, waits for him to pull back before she quietly says "Mr. President," before turning and walking towards their escort.
(In my head the earth president is a strange combination of Bush and Clinton and Hayes (yes, from SG1.)</P
