She arrives at his place early because for some weird reason there’s no traffic this Saturday morning.
He’s the one with the dad SUV and she loves her car but it just won’t fit two mountain bikes and she hasn’t had it fitted for a bike rack yet.
She knocks and he doesn’t answer so she opens the door and yells “Jamie?” as she peeks in around the frame.
“Just a second. I’m a bit late.” She hears from the bedroom. She catches her reflection in the mirror, dirty hair in a ponytail, no makeup and bares her teeth to make sure the bagel she ate in the car on the way over didn’t get stuck in her teeth because Jamie would tease her about that forever.
She catches sight of a picture of the twins, the image of innocence and wants to snort, has seen them run their daddy and mommy ragged. Katee can’t wait for the girls to grow up so she can teach all three some tricks and drive their daddy crazy.
“I’m almost ready,” Jamie’s words are muffled and she looks over as he pulls a t-shirt over his head. She swallows, wishes it weren’t a gulp because even though she’s seen it a fair amount of Eva and Sarah’s daddy, he still makes her catch her breath and chokes her breath when he’s half dressed. She does not, absolutely does not trace the line of hair running down his abdomen with her eyes, and instead takes a breath and looks back at the pictures of the girls Kerry placed on the wall and says “Good, because I’m ready to go.’
hee! and that's why I like you. Those two are so much . . . easier than Kara/Lee. And the chemistry. OMG. You shouldn't be encouraging me.
Oh, what the hell?

They have brunch at a little café in North Van and the waitress smiles and pours them coffee as they sit.
“Doing the trails?” she asks as she sets down menus.
“Just one today,” and the waitress beams at Jamie and Katee is always amazed by how people react to a pretty face and an accent.
The woman leaves them alone and they peruse the menu. She orders an omelet with a side of hash browns and Jamie orders the one dish that allows him to have every kind of meat the restaurant offers.
“Protein,” he says when she raises an eyebrow.
They sit and chat and wait for their breakfast and Katee drinks coffee while Jamie goes to the bathroom.
Jamie slides back into the booth and smiles at her. “It’s a good thing we’re not more famous.”
She cocks a brow and looks up at him from behind the cup she has cradled in her hands. “Why not?”
“Could you imagine the rumors? We’re sitting her all sweaty and disheveled. I can’t imagine what the tabloids would come up with if someone saw us.” He takes a sip of coffee. “Well, the British press would have a field day. I’m a little disappointed in the American press, actually.”
Katee snorts into her coffee. “Hon, we’re covered in dirty and sweat. I think people have figured us out as mountain bikers.” And Jamie smiles that smile she tries not to love, that she tries not to want to jump him every time he turns it on her, which seems like far too often to her.
He leans forwards, across the table and the salt and pepper and stacks of jam. “Maybe we like it dirty,” and Katee has to laugh because she doesn’t know what else to say.
