So, I went out of town on business on Friday morning and had people staying with me until Sunday, which was when I finally got to see Unfinished Business. I'm making up for lost time with this 1600 word gem. Oy.
I can’t ever hope to be objective about this episode because dude, it’s one of my ‘ships getting together. I’d feel the same about an ep where Sam and Jack or Mulder and Scully got together and did some sexin’ and confessing of the trueloveforeverandever. So I liked it a lot and have watched it many times since I first downloaded it yesterday.
- I concur with everyone who found that first Kara and Lee scene incredibly hot. Man, man Lee can’t help but rise to Kara’s bait. MAN. Also, I love that they start breathing harder because they’re standing so close to each other and how their voices get all low and intimate.
- “Truth stings, don’t it?” Uh, when did Kara become a character in the world of Firefly?
- Katee’s extensions are fabulous in this ep. Her hair is really, really, really cute. I also think she looks a lot like Kristen Bell, which is a good thing.
- Lee’s hair, on the other hand, is terrible. I don’t know what they did to poor Jamie, but it blows. It bothers me the most when he’s giving the whole “is this who you want to spend the rest of your life with speech” because it doesn’t even look like him.
Also that speech made me squeal out loud. He wants to spend the rest of his life with her. That’s just awesome.
-
wisteria_’s already said pretty much everything I want to say about Kara when Lee first kisses her, but I want to add one little thing. Something I adore about this show is how good the sound is in these intimate scenes. There’s this part during the sex scene in Kobol’s Last Gleaming where Lee sighs into Kara’s neck and another when you hear him take a deep breath and places this open-mouthed kiss on her throat and it is just – I don’t know what I like so much about it. It’s so sexy and real and passionate and it just works for me.
In this case, Lee kisses Kara (and boy do I wish we could see him and his face better, though I think in these scenes we’re supposed to know exactly what Lee’s feeling – love, joy, relief and a profound feeling of finally – and Kara’s the one we need to get a handle on) he kisses her once, twice, three times, and then his hands come up to frame her face and he pulls back, just a little and Kara lets out this small gasp, so Lee smoothes his thumbs along her cheeks and kisses her again. There’s so much there in that little sound, everything from “what are we doing?” to “why are you stopping?” to “don’t stop.” It’s wonderful. And Lee must smile at her, because she so clearly smiles back and looks so pretty and happy. Mmmm. It’s just perfect and everything I wanted from their first kiss from Kara’s perspective.
Why yes, I’ve watched that bit a lot, why do you ask?
- In a similar vein, I love the way Kara’s head comes down and she and Lee sort of touch noses and foreheads post-y’knowing as Lee’s lying back down. There’s some so pure and desperate and something that hurts so good in that sequence of movement.
And every time, that cut to Kara and her gasp makes me shiver. I, for one, found it to be incredibly hot.
- The crass question I can’t quite believe I’m asking:
Er, so. Position-wise. Kara was on top, yes, but Lee was sitting up? That seems sort of, er, difficult and uncomfortable.
Also, so, it’s pretty clear Lee came first? I can’t believe I’m asking. Because we saw Kara’s, er, y’know, orgasm and while he seems blissed-out, there’s no, y’know, obvious orgasm on his part, right? So maybe he was, er, helping her along with the sitting up?
Let us never speak of this again. But I know I’m not the only one wondering.
- Also, okay, so apparently I’m just perverted because I’m not overly upset we can’t see the post-sexing kiss because we can hear it, and that’s almost better in my books. It’s pretty damn sexy, anyways. I’m creepy, I know, it’s ok.
Oh! And I love how she sort of collapses on him, post-kiss, and then her hand by his head is sort of shaky as she pulls herself off of him. Mmmm.
OH! And the little crinkle in Lee’s forehead after “that makes things more complicated” when he says “yeah” and shakes his head a little. ADORABLE. Wrap me a Jamie Bamber up, I want one for Christmas. (And he has good grammar! And went to Cambridge!)
- When I first saw the shot of Kara waking up on Lee’s chest, all I could see was his nipple. Yes, I am crass, thank you.
- It’s so interesting to me how Lee gets almost no light on his face during the entire set of scenes once he kisses Kara. The audience doesn’t get to see his face clearly until Kara yells that she loves him. And interestingly, almost as soon as we get to see the joy and love and hope on his face, Kara starts giving into all of those doubts we’ve been seeing.
- Dear Katee, the blood ‘stache is still not a good look for you, and you can rock pretty much anything. Love, me.
- Ah, Dee. All I am going to say is when Anders comes up behind her, she’s worrying her wedding ring. Also, I kind of got the feeling that Anders was sitting in the mess, feeling sorry for himself when someone burst in yelling “oh my god, Starbuck and Apollo are fighting each other!” so he came running like a kid to a playground fight and then he got the shock of his life.
Poor Dee is so broken at the end of this. I don’t think Lee can ever explain this.
- I’ve read a couple of places that Katee and Jamie were actually hitting each other while they filmed this. Ouch. And also, kids, maybe find another way to work out your issues. (Someone who is not me needs to write me Katie about this.)
- Lee’s so happy just before Adama tells him Kara got married. Even waking up without her, even when he clearly knows something is wrong, he can’t stop smiling.
Also, Lee is walking funny. Take that as you will. I am taking it as dirty as I can, but hey.
- So yeah, Adama’s a little oblivious when breaking the news to Lee that Kara got married. But cut the guy some slack. Last thing he knew, he was approving Dee’s transfer to the Pegasus so that she could warm Lee’s bunk. I don’t think Adama is as perceptive as fandom has made him out to be, at least when it comes to his son. I mean Lee’s standing right in front of him having a panic attack and feeling his heart break and he barely notices. I think the thought that Kara and Lee might have feelings beyond sibling-esque rivalry and affection would be one hell of a surprise to him. (Note: I don’t think he’d disapprove, I just think he’d be pretty stunned.) But Adama munching away as he told Lee? Hilarious, in a terrible, terrible way.
- When the ‘greatest ship hits’ montage started, I literally said out loud “what the hell?” I mean, I – just- Ron, David, huh? It was weird. Maybe what was more interesting to me was the scenes they chose to leave out that have also been read as shippy by fandom – them fighting over spilled pain, her congratulating him after blowing up the tyllium refinery, buddy cops, those sorts of things. They pretty much stuck with the bits that were overtly romantic. I think someone somewhere on my flist noted that this was the producers tying a big red bow on the true love of Kara and Lee, and heck yeah, it looks like that.
- “WATCH THAT PRETTY FACE” is my favorite heckle EVER. I don’t know who the woman was referring to, though I assume it was Lee, and I don’t care.
- Sigh.
- And of course the ending. I love love love how the other people in the room sensed the tension and the awkwardness and started leaving in droves as things wound down. I was, I will admitted, a little teary when “I missed you too, I missed you too” bubbled from Lee’s lips, sounding choked up. Oy. Break my heart and the boy’s too, why don’t you? Oh Lee. All those months of frustration and worry and fear and hatred and denial and it all boils down to this, a most public private moment.
In non-pilot news:
- Sharon’s “You did it, baby!” made me see Helo and Sharon’s chemistry. I actually loved these two in this episode. The fightin’ Agathons indeed. Hee. Weird that the least dysfunctional couple in the episode was them. Huh.
- I’ve never felt the Papadama/Laura thing, but boy oh boy did I love them in this ep. They were getting stoned together! How awesome is that!
- We didn’t get a good explanation for why Kara and Tigh are buddy-buddy, except for the one scene where Anders is telling the story about the handcuffs and the two straws and Tigh gives Kara this sort of approving looking. I’ve always though Kara and Tigh had more of back-story than we’ve been told, and maybe this is a reflection of that.
Overall, I may wear out my copy of this ep, and I can’t wait for deleted scenes.
In other news, I’m staying in a beautiful CP Rail hotel in a suite. When you look up “not classy enough for her current surroundings,” there is a picture of me.

It's like she can't believe it's happening, and doesn't want to show anything until she's certain he means it, because she's been guarding herself and her feelings for this man forever. And only then, when he's actually kissing her, do her eyes flutter closed and then she looks almost desperate, leaning into him and gasping when he pulls away. I just. aldkjalkdgjaldkg.
It's really, really sweet and hot and passionate and everything I've ever wanted from them kissing. I may also have watched it a lot of time.
I, TOO, WONDER ALL YOUR POINTS. BUT I CAN'T ANSWER THEM. SORRY.
