Ok. I'm back, safe, settled and sound from my travels. Atlanta, Halifax, plus various airports - what a whirlwind!
I had a fantastic time - for me, this Dragon*Con was much more about the people than the panels, I think, though some of the panels were great. I did get to ask EJO a question (the ever lovely, every gracious, ever hospitable
wisteria_ has the question and answer here. (I have not watched the clip myself, as I started it and then lunged for the pause buttom at the sound of my own voice. Oy.)
Things learned this D*C:
Food related:
- The price for any sandwich at O'Hare International is $7.49. You can go to every single place selling a sandwich at the gates, and they will all be the same price. You will be disgusted by this, but you will pay it anyways .
- Being sweet and calm and greatful with your airline rep when your earlier flight was cancelled and no one, including the airline employees, was notified, can do wonders. Like getting you upgraded to the not-quite-economy,-not-quite-first-class seats on United.
- Dear America: Your Dasani bottles are the wrong shape.
- Someone thought Iced Tea flavoured mints would be a good idea. My biggest regret this trip was not buying them.
- To add to my list of "foods I crave that are only available in Atlanta (featuring chicken fried steak and fried chicken from the mall)": noodles from this place
wisteria_ took me one night. Mmmmm. Noodles.
- The yogurt and granola cup from the store next to the Starbucks in the Marriott is still really, really good.
BSG:
- Michael Hogan is a rock star and was somehow unaware of this fact.
- It was just fantastic to watch Hogan get a little bit more comfortable over the weekend. You could tell (and, well, Eddie told us) that he didn't really know what to do with con, but slowly he relaxed and got into it and joked around a little bit. He's just adorable. I'm such a big fan now, and I'm not the only one. He definitely had the longest autograph line of the bsg people when we were at the walk of fame.
- Were you aware EJO created BSG? And most of the twists in Bladerunner? *rolls eyes* I mean, the guy was fantastic, and if his enthusiam was feigned, then he is one hell of an actor, but still.
- 3000 people shouting "So say we all" in response to EJO could not help but give me goosebumps, even if I did feel a little silly.
- At one point during one of the bsg panels I looked up and realized all of the guests were male. How odd, for a show with such promienant and strong female characters.
- Eddie has promised to try to get Mary, Katee and Grace (Maybe? I can't remember the thrid) to come next year. I WILL NOT BE FOOLED AGAIN. Yes, I likely will..
- Eddie's mic? Always works.
Firefly:
- Nathan Fillion should possibly host his own late night talk show.
- Also, I can't believe we made it into that Firefly panel. And that we weren't in the back row or standing. And that Nathan and Morena made out a little. And that Jewel Staite is so pretty and adorable. And Alan T is basically Wash. And that Nathan and Morena made out a little. I am jealous/happy for the Firefly rpf people out there. This is
anr's Katie fic in which something similar happens. Not that I was thinking about that. Ahem.
Stargate:
- I never understood why Cliff Simon (Ba'al) did so many cons, but he was a great panel guest, and, let it be said, sexy as hell.
- I only made
splash_the_cat's SG1 get together for a few minutes because I hadn't eaten all day and needed to find food, but as always it was fantastic to see her. And then she went and insulted my SG1 honour! Sam/Jack is still the original OTP, yo! (Er, after Mulder and Scully. But whatever, yo, I wasn't super in fandom back then.)
Misc:
- I did not see nipple-rings-and-gauze-makes-a-costume-,-doesn't-it? girl this year. I am strangely disappointed.
Best D*C improvements? It's a tie between broadcasting some of the panels on D*C tv in the hotels (instead of the fan-funded StarTrek episodes like last year. Yes, they were as bad as you suspect they might be. Possibly worse. Not that I judge.) and the reopening of the conference level of the Marriott and the ballrooms. Things were crowded, but no where like last year when the firemarshall was shutting things down.
Also, embarassing (though not on the level of last year's smiffing Jamie incident): introducing myself to people, referring to my lj and having to say "er, yeah. I don't post that much." I resolve to change that.
The thing I will always like most about cons and various fandom related events is meeting other fans. The folks I met in line this year were fantastic, and I was so pleased to pass an hour (or two. Or two and a half) chatting with you all. I've said it before, and I will say it again: despite all of the crap that sometimes goes on, fans are some of the nicest, most genuine people I have ever met.
The trip home to Halifax to see the parentals et al was good. Relaxing, despite the fact I only had internet access in the living room. We got the reminants of both Gustav and Hanna while I was home. Way to be a stalker and chase me across the continent, Gustav.
Long story short? The highlight of the trip to D*C this year was definitely the people. The conversation in
greycoupon's room with
nicole_anell,
catku,
karma_aster,
lyssie,
prolix_allie was some of my favorite times. And I got to see my dear, dear
wisteria_, which is always my highlight.

And good question at the EJO thing! I was, um, asleep during that panel. You should not fear your voice at all.

I liked my EJO question, but I got half way through and he looked like he had stopped listening and I sort of freaked out a little (that's what I do, I suppose) but I was really happy with his answer, or what I remember of it. I should watch it again.
