Consensus seems to be it's still too early for Christmas lights and Christmas decorations. And while I suspect the display I saw yesterday had more to do with a break in the seemingly never-ending rain instead of trying to get a jump on the holiday spirit, I was at the mall today and it felt like mid-December. We're talking full on Christmas decorations.
I am a little curious as to whether American malls have their Christmas decor up yet. In Canada we don't have the dividing line of American Thanksgiving (since our Thanksgiving is in October). I always feel that the decorations should wait until at least Rememberance Day, but that seems to be an antiquated notion.
Also, I am horrified some radio stations are apparently playing Christmas music. I hate hate hate the Christmas carols they play on the radio. Spare me from the supposed vocal prowess that turns O Holy Night into a series of trills and runs that are absolutely unnecessary. Oy. And is there anything worse than Paul McCartney's tone deaf ''A Wonderful Christmas Time"? No. No there is not. Don't fight me on this. I will win.
Er, bah humbug?

I completely agree! There's already commercials and all that on TV and it's just... I'm not ready yet :/ And they'd already been up for a week or so. I can't help but think that they shouldn't be up when Remembrance Day comes, it just doesn't feel right.
I like Christmas carols when they're simple and in the spirit of the season, if that makes sense. When they're just another way for singers to make some money... Not so much.

Some of the more intense crafts that take longer to do were there earlier, obviously, and the ornaments and whatnots didn't arrive till October at least! Still a MITE early IMHO. To be fair though, customers WERE asking for the Lemax Christmas Village collection before we got it in, AGAIN! And ornament sales were brisk the week of Halloween (though more brisk immediately after it!)
Needless to say, it is a tad weird to be ringing in a customer's order w/ BOTH Halloween AND Christmas stuff in it - talk about hard to keep the glitter wars from happening! And there is something fundamentally WRONG about wrapping fragile ornaments and asking the customer if they want them in the same bag as their skull luminaries (which were also wrapped)!

(this is at least the Michaels stores in eastern Canada aka Atlantic provinces!)

I'm so sick of holiday music by the time december rolls around that I don't even bother with the radio much anymore, just pull out the ipod and wander around listening to that. At least it's music I can stand to listen to over and over again.
Curious, since you don't have turkey day in Nov, what is the big start of the christmas shopping season? Ours is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, but I've already seen doorbuster sales for toys and stuff from some of the bigger retailers trying to get a jump on sales since they've sucked so badly this year.

That said, I grew up in a country where they started playing carols over the air in September, since we also did not have the arbitrary start line of Turkey Day in November.

I was at the mall today and saw Santa wandering around with a bag cause apparently he was shopping?? Hee! I guess he's gotta buy the gifts for all the world's children...
