My fellow Americans friendly flist members,

Some of you may have seen your Canadian flist members commenting on the ridiculousness that is our current constitutional crisis govenment. Some of you have expressed your amused confusion.

This is the best explanation of the whole mess I have seen. My fellow Canadians, even you might find is useful. (Though, since it was written, the GG has approved a prorogue of parliment.)

As Henry Champ has said, the US elections are interesting before the vote, the Canadian interesting after.

Can I get a little love for Henry Champ? No?

Thanks so much for the link! As a typical American who's all "Buh? Canada government what?" that's the most accessible overview I've seen so far.

That link helped a lot. I was on the verge of giving up on trying to understand your mess on top of trying to understand ours. ;)

Did Stephen Harper forget how parlimentary democracies work? You have to be concilatory when you have a minority government, or the other parties can form a coalition and kick you out. That fake shock at how they are trying to steal the PM job from him, like this isn't perfectly legal, though rare. The GG deciding to prorogue parliment to let the sitting PM try and fix a huge ass bungle is even more rare.

Plus, 68% of Canadians did not vote for him. This kind of arrogance (and I want to say stupidity too!) is why I didn't vote for Harper in the first place, despite not really caring for the opposition either.

Thanks! Between that and [livejournal.com profile] meresy explaining the situation I think I understand what is going on. Kinda.

Can't you just be simple like us and have your elections decided by the Supreme Court?
