I managed to wear two different shoes to work today. Sadly this is not the first time. I only noticed because one leg felt shorter than the other.
In other news, I suddenly adore Prince William and Kate Middleton. I'm no monarchist but I am stupidly excited for the wedding. That being said, my 12-year-old self is somewhere sulking, very upset about this. She still would love Kate's dress in the engagement photos I think.
I have so little to say these days so maybe this will spark something:
I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" or "Tell me about Character A?" That isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if that's right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!
I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.
And it seems like a lot more fun than work.

It's probably wise to just give people the day off because then they won't be at the office watching it on the office TV instead of working, or trying to get streaming video over the intranet or similar. There were several times at pivotal games in the World Cup when people quit even *pretending* to work and just watched TV instead. Even people like me who had the game recording at home and should have been avoiding spoilers. But it's a lot easier to give people one day off than a whole month. Sucks for people in the service industry who'll have to work anyway, but I bet lots of them wikll be watching the wedding in between brewing up lattes and so forth.

Fic question, then: When you start writing - what part do you usually start with? The pr0n-y bits? the beginning? The end? Do you start with just a random scene and then build out from there? :)
Or wait - was this supposed to be about a specific fic? If so - then all the above questions apply to Song of the Open Road. :D

Such an interesting question. I don't tend to start with one specific bit - though it's usually not the porn. In most cases I have the general idea for the story form in my head - specific lines and scenes and images - that I have to get down right away. I sit and write for about an hour non-stop and get the basics of whatever's been percolating in my brain. I usually know what I want the story to be, or where I want it to go at that point, but very rarely do I write it all at that time. (This is why I am such a slow and non-prolific writer. I can let things sit for years. Literally.) Once the essential bits are down I go back and reread and add the connective bits that I realize are
In the case of Song, I wrote the whole thing in less than a week. I wish I could remember the specific bits I wrote first exactly. I'm pretty sure they were the bits when Lee first hears Kara when he's climbing the mountain in Africa. The image in my writerly brain was of Kara with Lee, always, and those were the bits I wrote first. I think in retrospect they were my least successful in the story, but they got things going. Song was a bit of a special case - the rest just tumbled out over the next week, mostly because *I* was feeling so much, and so driven to give Lee a different ending.
But yes - I write scenes and then hang the rest of the story around them. That's the reason why my stories never seem to be just one scene.
