There's something almost sexual about sliding into bed when she's this tired.
Three days in the field getting nothing more than cat naps followed by an emergency at the SGC that only she could fix and she figures it's been at least 72 hours since she got more than forty five minutes of uninterrupted shut eye.
Dr. Lam had ordered an airman to drive her home when she insisted on sleeping in her own bed. She'd barely had the front door closed when she'd started stripping. She'd been down to her underwear when she'd reached the bedroom and that had been enough; she'd reached for the covers and slid in and a shiver had worked its way along her spine as she sunk into the mattress and pulled the down comforter up under her chin, her eyes already closing.
Until she nearly screamed when an arm snaked around her from the other side of the bed.
"Sorry, Carter. Figured you knew I was here." and her brain catches up to the rest of her body and she might remember seeing a rental car in front of the house and his jacket slung over the back of the couch and there was the giant lump in her bed she had been imaging was soft, warm, wonderful down but in reality was actually pretty Jack-shaped.
"No, I, I'm just-" and she closes her eyes and gives up on words and shuffles a little towards him and the heat he's generating.
She's warm and comfortable and finally relaxing after a long time and all she wants is to fall asleep now that she's home, but she knows he's not scheduled to visit for two more weekends (thirteen days, fifteen hours and seven minutes. Not that she's counting).
So instead she rolls over to face him and nuzzles her face into the pillow. "What’re you doing here?" and it comes out a little more slurred that she'd like but she's starting to realise it's okay to be vulnerable in front of him.
Her eyes are slits at this point but she sees him open one brown eye wearily. "I've got an appointment at the SGC at six am. Took the red eye in."
"Hmmm." Oh, she's so comfortable and the bed's so soft but she likes the way he's looking at her, like he hasn't seen her in days and is a little afraid if he closes his eyes he'll wake up and this will just be another dream.
Or maybe that's what she's thinking. She's so tired she's not quiet sure she can tell anymore.
"No, I mean what are you doing here." She cracks her eyes open a little wider and watches as he blinks slowly.
"Uh, your place was closer to the airport?"
"Jack." It's not true. She's forty five minutes out of the way, not to mention the extra commuting time from her place to the SGC.
"I forgot the key to my place and I know where you keep the spare?" That could be true but she doesn't think it is.
"Hmmm?" she smiles a little as she hums. She knows exactly why he's here.
"I missed you." It's so low and quiet she almost misses it, but she doesn't, so she pulls his arm further over her hip and slides closer, until her face is buried in his t-shirt-clad chest and his hand is gently smoothing up and down over the skin of her lower back.
"I missed you too." And that's the end of their usual routine on the phone, so she settles herself against him and lets her eyes closed, ready to fall asleep. She's so ridiculously tired. How did he do this whole running a team thing for so long when he's so much older than her?
He buries his nose in the crook of her neck and takes a deep breath. "You smell nice." And she snorts, because that's certainly not true.
He pushes his face further into her skin and takes another quiet breath. "I love you." There's some small part of her that thinks that evidence from her past would suggest that she should be panicking at that, the first time he's said those words, but the rest of her is too tired and not surprised and thinks it's about damned time.
"I love you too." She sort of half mumbles it and hopes he knows that it doesn't mean she means it any less, it just means she hasn't slept in days.
"Okay. Good. I just wanted to say it." And she smiles and rubs her face against his t-shirt and wishes she wasn't thisclose to falling asleep.
"I'm glad you did."
And she thinks he hums and says something in reply but she might already be asleep.
