I have a Stargate question that I'm hoping someone out there will know the answer to. I've checked a couple guides but no luck.

Okay. The Stargate. The DHD doesn't always work. I know this. If the DHD doesn't work, it will still receive a wormhole and they can still go through the Stargate, they just can't dial home, right?

Hmm. So. When the DHD hasn't worked in the past, what have they done other than have Sam fix it? What I think I'm ultimately wondering is how manual dialing works. I know they've done it (I can see Teal'c pushing the inner ring around in my mind) but have they used a secondary power source? I think they've used a naquadah (is that even spelled right? This fandom's so weird) generator in the past, so if the DHD is shot and they have no secondary power source, can they make the Stargate work?

In summary: what would it take to make SG-1 unable to make the Stargate work? (Other than y'know, burial by meteor shower or the likes.)

Yes, we've seen them power it with the naquadah generator (in, uh, the one with Nyan and the cages ... blanking) and with Linnea's weird power source (also blanking on the name ... the one where they were on the prison planet and let the evil Linnea loose on the universe).

If they gated to a place where the DHD was dead beyond Sam's ability to repair, *and* they had no backup power source (and presumably the combined power of their zats and Teal'c's staff wouldn't be enough), they'd be fucked.

I read a really bad fanfic based on this premise recently ... mercifully I can't recall what it was.

This question *is* ultimately for a fic. Here's hoping it's not a bad one (I am treading very carefully on the ledge between reworking and indulging in fanon cliche.)
