I have a Stargate question that I'm hoping someone out there will know the answer to. I've checked a couple guides but no luck.
Okay. The Stargate. The DHD doesn't always work. I know this. If the DHD doesn't work, it will still receive a wormhole and they can still go through the Stargate, they just can't dial home, right?
Hmm. So. When the DHD hasn't worked in the past, what have they done other than have Sam fix it? What I think I'm ultimately wondering is how manual dialing works. I know they've done it (I can see Teal'c pushing the inner ring around in my mind) but have they used a secondary power source? I think they've used a naquadah (is that even spelled right? This fandom's so weird) generator in the past, so if the DHD is shot and they have no secondary power source, can they make the Stargate work?
In summary: what would it take to make SG-1 unable to make the Stargate work? (Other than y'know, burial by meteor shower or the likes.)
Thanks!

They have also, in Small Victories, said that there is enough residual power left in a 'gate to do a manual dialout without an alternate power source or a DHD.
Huh. That's . . . huh. Pretty much contrary to everything else. But still interesting. (and, I might add, a good excuse to go watch that episode again.)
In The Fifth Race, Sam, Teal'c and two other flunkies went to a planet that had a broken DHD (which Sam was unable to fix). Jack, however, used the knowledge of the Ancients to draw up blueprints of a DHD so Sam could fix it. Based on that, (since Sam has no doubt now studied those plans to death) a DHD would almost have to be in pieces for it to be "unfixable" for SG1.
That's what I figured. The DHD would have to be all but useless and they'd have to have no replacement parts, as it were. Hmma.
The SGC, however, does always check that there is a DHD in place before sending a team through.
Yeah, that was my understanding too. Good. Glad I'm on a somewhat similar page here.
So: disintegrated (on the inside) DHD, no alternate power source, and no residual energy. That'd pretty much leave them stranded.
I'm still wondering about the residual energy thing. Cause, hmm. How much energy? And, like nanda suggested, could they use that residual energy combined with what they've got on them in the way of weapons? (not that this is directly relevant to the fic, but it's interesting.)
Er... sorry about the rambling. I've been in this fandom waaaaaaaay too long. :)
I bow down in front of your massive amounts of Stargate knowledge, oh wise one. :)
Thanks so much! I think I've got a grip on some of what I need now. :)
